Early Orthodontic Treatment

Phase I Orthodontics in Katy, TX

Early Orthodontic Treatment in Katy, TX - Katy OrthodonticsThe American Association of Orthodontists recommends a child’s first orthodontic visit by age 7.  At this age, most children already have a few adult teeth and it is a great time to make sure that the teeth are aligning correctly.

It’s best to discover and address orthodontic issues early. Phase I treatment helps make sufficient room for adult teeth to erupt, which can help avoid tooth extractions or jaw surgery in the future. It can also help correct the growth of the jaw and certain bite problems such as underbites and crossbites.  Early treatment is best suited for children 7 -10 years old.

Your child may need early orthodontic treatment if he or she:

  • Breathes through the mouth or snores
  • Has difficulty chewing, biting, speaking, or breathing
  • Is thumbsucking or  has a lip sucking habit
  • Has teeth crowding
  • Has a big overbite, underbite or crossbite

Phase I early treatment involves minimally-invasive techniques such as partial braces, upper and lower expanders, habit appliances, and springs to correct underbite, overbite, crossbite, crowding or habits.  It can also avoid the need for permanent tooth extraction in Phase II as well as reduce the risk of impacted teeth.
